On January 23, 2002 the Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card program received an the DoD Best Practice Award, sponsored by The Potomac Forum, in partnership with Federal Computer Week.
On January 30, 2002, the DoD Common Access Card was selected as one of five winners of the Excellence.gov Awards, sponsored by the Federal CIO Council.
On February 2, 2002, the DoD Common Access Card program received an award for the Most Innovative Issuing Organization by the Smart Card Alliance.
On March 20, 2002 the DoD Common Access Card received the Federal CIO Council Showcase of Excellence Award.
On April 7, 2002, the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Norfolk, received the 2002 COMPUTERWORLD Honors Award for its unique software application development. Using smart card technology, SPAWAR created an automated system to provide critical information regarding a ship's state of readiness and security.
