DON IM and IT Conference in Virginia Beach is a Resounding Success
By CHIPS Magazine - July-September 2007
More than 700 attendees participated in the Department of the Navy Information Management and Information Technology Conference June 18-21, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center where they received the latest information on key IM and IT initiatives, policy and guidance.

Subject matter experts and DON and Defense Department leadership spoke on a range of subjects including: data management, knowledge management, information assurance, enterprise architecture, open source, the DON IM/IT workforce, WiMax and knowledge management.

But the speakers were not the only ones doing the talking; discussions were lively as attendees peppered conference speakers with questions and suggestions, which is a sure sign of an attentive audience.

DON Chief Information Officer Robert J. Carey led an IM/IT Workforce Town Hall in which he and DON CIO IM/IT workforce team lead, Sandy Smith, laid out the Department's strategy for developing an agile and highly competent community. Mr. Carey also briefed the Transformation Warfare Conference co-sponsored by the U.S. Naval Institute and AFCEA International, which was held at the same time and location as the DON conference.

Darlene Greifenberger, of the DON CIO, and James Craft, U.S. Marine Corps Deputy Chief Information Officer, demonstrated the DON IM and IT Performance Measurement Dashboard and briefed efforts underway in the Department to measure the effectiveness of IT resources and return on investment.

Other discussions included: the upcoming merger of the DON Application and Database Management System (DADMS) with the DoD Information Technology Portfolio Repository (DITPR-DON); use of fixed price contracting for IT projects; and improving government commercial software acquisition under the Enterprise Software Initiative.

A list of the conference presentations is available on the DON CIO Web site at http://www.doncio.navy.mil/ where copies of the presentations may also be requested.

Mark your calendars for the next DON IM and IT Conference planned for Feb. 4-7, 2008, in San Diego. See the DON CIO Web site or CHIPS for conference details and registration information in the coming months. No conference fee will be assessed, but registration is required.
