Because much of our work has a strong spatial component, our office utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support the diverse mission of the Service. GIS is a set of hardware and software which provides the user with valuable tools to manage and manipulate spatial data. We use this technology to generate maps, and view and analyze spatial data in order to assist in efforts including Endangered Species Section 7 consultation, Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) and Recovery Plan development, assessment of listed species status and recovery, determination of baseline information, and regional and landscape approaches to conservation.

In addition, we are currently tracking office activities using an online logging system in order to better monitor our projects and productivity. This provides us with the ability to map our projects and perform queries and analyses that help us to better understand cumulative impacts and development trends in the state.
