Quality Care at the Indian Health Service

The Secretary of The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) established the Executive Council on Quality Care in February 2016.  The council was formed to support Indian Health Service’s (IHS) efforts to deliver quality health care services to members of federally recognized tribes. The Executive Council is comprised of principals and senior staff from agencies across HHS.  In November 2016, the Council was made permanent through a Charter signed by Secretary Burwell [PDF - 155 KB].

The Executive Council mission is to support IHS’ efforts to develop, enact, and sustain an effective quality program – to improve quality and patient safety in the hospitals and clinics that IHS administers.  The Council will also implement a series of reforms intended to stabilize, strengthen, and raise the overall quality of care it provides to native people.  These reforms include providing technical assistance to bolster quality and safety, identifying solutions to address workforce recruitment and retention challenges, seeking creative solutions to infrastructure needs, and enhancing stakeholder engagement.
