Commercial Griddles

Commercial Griddle

Commercial griddles that have earned the ENERGY STAR are about 10 percent more energy efficient than standard models. Saving energy helps kitchen operators save money on utility bills and protect the climate by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This equates to savings of:

·  $120 per year for gas models and $100 per year for electric models

·  $1,100 and $1,200 over the product lifetime for gas and electric models, respectively

The ENERGY STAR label can be found on gas and electric, single and double-sided models that are thermostatically controlled.  Some of the additional benefits beyond energy savings of ENERGY STAR certified griddles include improved uniformity of temperature across the griddle plate, and a higher production capacity.  To meet the stringent requirements of the ENERGY STAR specification for griddles, manufacturers use some of the following approaches – using highly conductive or reflective plate materials, using improved thermostatic controls; and strategically placing thermocouples.

Save energy and cut costs by following these simple tips:

  •   Look for the ENERGY STAR
  •   Reduce idle time by turning the griddle down or off during periods of slow production
  •   Calibrate the griddle controls to operate at the correct temperature
  •   Replace missing control knobs

Manually controlled griddles and fry-top ranges are not currently eligible.

Current Specification Effective Date: May 2009

  • Covers gas and electric, single and double sided units which must meet cooking energy efficiency and normalized idle energy rate.
  • Griddles that earn the ENERGY STAR must meet a minimum cooking efficiency of 70 percent (electric) and 38 percent (gas) while also meeting maximum idle energy rates.
  • ENERGY STAR qualified griddles must meet at least a 38 percent cooking energy efficiency and have a normalized idle energy rate of 2,600 Btu/h/ft2.

What else should I look for when buying a commercial griddle?

Purchasing ENERGY STAR certified CFS equipment can cut kitchen utility costs and maintenance without sacrificing features, quality, or style. Many utilities also offer rebates to offset the purchase price of ENERGY STAR equipment.

For a list of CFS incentives, please see either the CFS Incentive Guide or the ENERGY STAR CFS Incentive Finder:

1.       The CFS Incentive Guide (EXCEL, 1.2 MB) provides a list of incentives for both ENERGY STAR certified equipment and energy efficient equipment not covered by the ENERGY STAR program.

2.       The CFS Incentive Finder is available for ENERGY STAR CFS utility incentives by location.

Eligible Types of Commercial Griddles: Single-and double-sided gas and electric models that are thermostatically controlled.

Ineligible Types of Commercial Griddles: Manually controlled griddles and fry-top ranges.
