Why municipalities should use UL certified DW treatment chemicals
The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is the main federal law that ensures the quality of Americans’ drinking water. Under the SDWA, the EPA sets rules for water-testing schedules, methods and techniques, and treatment chemical requirements that water systems must follow. These rules include establishing and enforcing standards (MCLs, treatment techniques, monitoring) that public drinking water systems must adhere to. States and Indian Tribes are given primary enforcement responsibility (primacy) for public water systems in their State. The drinking water regulations promulgated by 48 of the 50 states include a requirement that chemicals used in drinking water treatment must be certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 60.
UL is ANSI-Accredited to test and certify drinking water treatment chemicals in accordance with NSF/ANSI Standard 60. This provides municipalities and consumers the assurance that the chemicals in their drinking water comply with nationally recognized health effects standards.
Properly Specifying Certified Drinking Water Treatment Chemicals and Products
To ensure that your AHJ is getting the appropriate bids for your water treatment and delivery products all products should be proven to be certified by an ANSI Accredited third party. This documentation should be provided with bid documents and/or a link to certification on the third parties website should be provided.
