The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs is proposing a Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 budget of nearly $23 million, or an increase of $7 million from the FY 2016 budget of $16 million. The Office is proposing to double its technical assistance budget to $6 million to meet the increased demand for providing technical assistance to Indian Tribes, including Alaska Native village and regional corporations, and Tribal Energy Resource Development Organizations. The request would also fund an additional six full-time staff members needed to carry out the Office of Indian Energy’s programs, especially in remote communities in Alaska and the Arctic. The Office will continue to provide $12 million in financial assistance in the form of grants for the deployment of innovative energy systems and technologies and for the efficient delivery of technical assistance through intertribal technical assistance networks.
