Equal Employment Opportunity

The NSWC Carderock Division is committed to promoting equal employment opportunity for all persons in the workplace, and providing maximum opportunities at all levels of the organization. We are committed as an organization to hire and maintain a work force reflecting the diversity of our population. We search to recognize and utilize the unique qualities that employees of different backgrounds and cultures bring to the workplace. Each employee is an important member of the NSWC Carderock Division team. Our continued success requires that each employee and applicant be afforded the opportunity to excel.

Equal Employment Opportunity is the right of all persons to apply and be evaluated for job opportunities without regard to any non-merit related factors. It guarantees all individuals equal access to employment, development and advancement based on merit, ability and potential without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion or disability.

Affirmative Action demonstrates an employer's "good faith effort" to redress discriminatory past practices with a goal of eliminating underrepresentation of women and minority groups in the workplace. The Affirmative Employment Plan includes special efforts or programs to recruit, hire, develop, and advance women and minority in the workplace.

Diversity is the existence of individuals with different values, behaviors, approaches and life experiences that are shaped by such attributes as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, age, physical capabilities and appearance, national origin, religion, professional discipline and cultural heritage. It concerns valuing and fully utilizing the talents and skills of all people. Diversity also emphasizes using these differences to building effective teams to increase organizational capacity and effectiveness.

Special Emphasis Programs are designed to address employment-related concerns in the work place and recognize underrepresented groups. The overall EEO program process requires complete assessment of the problems of each individual group and the identification of affirmative strategies to eliminate all EEO related deficiencies. NSWCCD joins the nations annually in recognizing the contributions of females and minorities through the special emphasis programs during Black History Month (February), Women's History Month (March), Asian American/Pacific Islander Month (May), Hispanic Heritage Month (September), Handicap Employment Awareness Month (October) and Native American Heritage Month (November).

The EEO Advisory Committee is the vehicle that helps accomplish the goals and objectives of the special emphasis programs. A successful EEO program benefits everyone. In order to have a viable EEO and successful program, we need each employee's help and participation. Board employees represent the workforce on a collateral duty basis and bring back to the employee's pertinent information on EEO projects and programs.

Accommodations for Disabled Employees are provided by NSWC Carderock Division. Interpreter services for deaf employees to attend meetings, training courses and other work-related programs are arranged through first line supervisors and the Workforce Diversity Office. Other accommodations include: TTY's, print enlargers, and computers. If accommodations, interpreter service or other assistance is required, please contact the Workforce Diversity Office in Carderock 301-227-1441.

The Discrimination Complaints Program is available to all employees and applicants for employment at NSWCCD. An employee, former employee or applicant for employment who believes he/she has been discriminated against because of race, color, sex, national origin, age, religion, physical or mental disability condition or reprisal (prior EEO involvement) can contact the NSWC Carderock Division Complaints Manager. The contact must occur within 45 calendar days from the date of the alleged discriminatory act or the effective date of the personnel action.
