WELCOME FROM OFAP DIRECTOR REID NELSON

Welcome to the second edition of the ACHP’s Section 106 Newsletter. We appreciate the positive reception to the inaugural newsletter and the constructive feedback we received about its content. It seems we are accomplishing our goal of helping you participate more effectively in the Section 106 process by keeping you informed of recent Section 106 news, guidance, and training from the ACHP.

SECTION 106 IN THE NEWS

Now you can learn about Section 106 anytime, anywhere! The ACHP’s Section 106 training program is pleased to announce the new E-Learning Portal is open. This site provides access to online Section 106 training courses that can be taken at your own pace. Read about training here.

The ACHP is encouraging federal agencies to consider providing direct assistance to SHPOs and THPOs to support their role in Section 106 reviews. Read more about this effort here.

WORKING WITH SECTION 106

1. GAD Facts:

The ACHP’s Guidance on Agreement Documents (GAD) is an online tool for developing clear, concise, and complete Section 106 agreements. It went live in November 2014. This occasional e-news item highlights a piece of advice from GAD that can help you navigate the drafting of Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs) and Programmatic Agreements (PAs). GAD is available online here. 

Understanding the Reviewer’s Guide and Content Checklists
GAD contains two agreement document checklists, one for document content and one for those reviewing the document.

NEW SECTION 106 SUCCESS STORIES PUBLISHED

The ACHP is developing a series of Section 106 Success Stories in honor of the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act. Quite a few have been published since our last e-newsletter. A couple of the most recent include the following:
