The Newcastle Field Office is responsible for Fire Management on over 300,000 surface acres within Northeast Wyoming. Wildfire suppression for the field office area is conducted through a coordinated effort involving BLM, Wyoming State, Adjacent Federal, and Local County Support.
The Newcastle Field Office Area is located within and administered by the Wyoming Eastern Zone, headquartered in Casper, WY. The field office area is covered under both the Casper Dispatch Center in Casper, WY (covering Niobrara County) and Great Plains Dispatch Center in Rapid City, SD (covering Crook and Weston Counties).
Fire prevention and reduction of wildfire threats are high priorities for the Newcastle Field Office. Areas at high risk for catastrophic or urban-interface fire such as the Newcastle Fire Defense Zone are identified and treated. Most currently on-going and planned projects involve mechanical manipulation of encroachment treatments. Prescribed fire is also used to reduce prairie wildfire threats and rejuvenate or improve wildfire habitats and range resources.
All treatments are modeled after natural fire processes and aim to reduce health and safety risks to both the general public and firefighter personnel.
