We are fortunate here in FWS to have as our Federal Preservation Officer the longest serving FPO in Government. Kevin Kilcullen takes some time from his schedule to reflect on the National Historic Preservation Act as it turns 50 years old. Kevin offers some unique insights into how he has seen the law develop over his career and what it has meant to federal agencies.

In the 50 years since the signing of the National Historic Preservation Act, the kinds of projects that federal agencies have worked on have varied greatly. Tim Binzen, archaeologist in the Northeast Region of FWS, and Eugene Marino, HQ FWS, discuss some recent cultural resources compliance projects in the Northeast that were done in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. These projects are certainly unique applications of the Section 106 process and illustrate how preservation projects have changed since the passage of the Act.
