The U.S. remains deeply committed to Egypt’s democratic success and prosperity. Democracy and Governance programs in Egypt support free and fair elections, empowering citizens to play an enhanced role in their country's future, expanding independent civil society, and building democratic institutions that are transparent and accountable.   

USAID'S DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE PROGRAM IN EGYPT WORKS WITH EGYPTIAN COUNTERPARTS TO:

  • Support the Government of Egypt's decentralization efforts to respond to community priorities and promote community participation;
  • Strengthen civil society; and 
  • Promote competitive political processes.

During FY 2011, Egypt underwent a revolution and transition toward a democratic republic. The revolution directly and indirectly impacted our activities in Egypt. Host-country counterparts shifted.  The U.S. worked to ensure that our programs were responding to the emerging needs expressed by Egyptians in the immediate aftermath of the revolution.
