USAID partners with Tanzanians to build livelihoods and manage natural resources by developing and implementing national environmental policies and supporting community-based conservation. USAID’s sustainable landscape approach targets critical ecosystems to sustain wildlife habitats, reverse land degradation, restore watersheds, and improve community livelihoods through conservation enterprises.

“Improved natural resource management” includes activities that promote enhanced management of natural resources for one or more objectives, such as conserving biodiversity, sustaining soil or water resources, mitigating climate change, and/or promoting sustainable agriculture. This is essential for preserving biodiversity and reducing the impact of climate change.
Natural resource management and biodiversity conservation training transfers knowledge, skills, or attitudes through structured learning and follow-up activities, or through less structured means, to solve problems or fill identified performance gaps. Training includes long-term academic degree programs, short or long-term nondegree technical courses in academic or in other settings, nonacademic seminars, workshops, on-the-job learning experiences, observational study tours, or distance learning exercises or interventions. Natural resource managementand biodiversity training is important for building local capacity and promoting sustainability.
Institutions with improved capacity will be better able to govern, coordinate, analyze, advise, or act to mitigate climate change through clean energy sources or absorption of carbon in forests adaptation, or to adapt to the risks and consequences of climate change.
Climate vulnerability assessments uncover major gaps in knowledge with respect to potential climate futures and the resulting impacts on people and the ecosystems on which they depend. They provide further understanding of climate change impacts, both current and future, on resources that are critical to human safety, security, and prosperity.

Policies, laws, strategies, plans, agreements and regulations include those developed and formally endorsed by governmental, non-governmental, civil society, or private sector stakeholders. An improved enabling environment through legal and policy reform, strategy development, and planning is essential for ensuring that efforts and investments in climate change have legal and strategic backing and institutional ownership.
(Crosscutting Indicator) The lack of access to economic resources is frequently cited as a major impediment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. Tracking the proportion of females in interventions designed to increase access to economic resources can provide information on USAID efforts to lift women out of poverty.

USAID’s assistance is most effective when it can work through partner country systems to improve local capacity. This ensures that the aid received reinforces the accountability of a government to its people and encourages partner countries to take the lead in managing their own development processes.

A hectare is equal to 10,000 square meters. Areas are rated on a set of criteria and then prioritized according to their biological significance, which helps USAID decide where to focus its work. Improved biophysical conditions are demonstrated where there is data showing improvement in one or more natural resources in the area over time.
Increased economic benefits are increases in economic earnings or consumption due to sustainable management or conservation of natural resources. When people receive tangible economic benefits from natural resource management or conservation, they are more likely to value and support these activities into the future, well after the project ends, thus creating a sustainable impact.

The changing climate presents different vulnerabilities in the communities within the country’s that we work. Climate vulnerability assessments provide the information necessary to plan for and mitigate risks.
With the support of USAID/Tanzania through the Scaling Up Conservation And Livelihoods Efforts program, the African Wildlife Foundation has been working with communities in northern Tanzania - around the Kolo Hills - to reverse trends in deforestation and forest degradation.
