In Liberia, the water supply and sanitation sector has seriously deteriorated after 14 years of civil war. USAID is improving access to clean water by establishing potable water systems that can be sustained by local authorities and consumers.

Globally, 2 million children die each year from diarrheal disease because they lack access to clean water.

Results

28,164 people in target areas received first-time access to improved drinking water
Improved drinking water sources are protected from outside contamination. Using an improved drinking water decreases the incidence of waterborne disease, especially among children under age five.
9,100 people in target areas received first-time access to improved sanitation facilities

An improved sanitation facility separates waste from human contact. Using an improved sanitation facility decreases the incidence of waterborne disease among household members, especially among children under age five.
