Connecting Technology...Connecting People
By Nancy Reasor - July-September 2001
Connecting Technology (CT) Spring 2001, sponsored by the Department of the Navy Information Technology (DON-IT) Umbrella Program and the Department of the Navy Chief Information Office (DON CIO) was held at the Pavilion Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We were honored to have not only Dan Porter (DON CIO) in attendance, but all three Deputy CIOs: Ron Turner, Deputy CIO for Infrastructure, Systems and Technology; Dave Wennergren, Deputy CIO for E-Business and Security, and Alex Bennet, Deputy CIO for Enterprise Integration.

The CT symposium featured dynamic speakers including Michael Dell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dell Computer Corporation, Stephen L. Squires, Chief Science Officer and Vice President of Hewlett-Packard Company, Joseph Cipriano, Program Executive Officer for Information Technology (PEO-IT), retired RADM Paul Tobin, Director of the Education Foundation, Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association (AFCEA), Larry M. Glasco, Executive Director of the Naval Supply Systems Command and Captain Steven Briganti, Commander Task Force (CTF) Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). The emergence and development of the NMCI to transform military business processes into eBusiness processes was one of the focus areas of this CT. CT industry and government exhibits showcased the latest technology solution tools to Web-enable and streamline processes.

One of the highlights of CT was a CIO roundtable discussion with an outstanding panel from the DON, United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the United States Marine Corps (USMC). The Navy was represented by Dan Porter, DON CIO and Michael Dominguez, CNO N6B. The USCG was represented by CAPT David McLeish, Chief, Office of Information Technology Architecture. The USMC was represented by COL Robert Baker, HQMC, C4, Director, Network Plans and Policy Division (CP).

DON CIO sponsored the presentation of DON eGovernment Awards, linking eBusiness and Knowledge Management, to: the eBusiness Operations Office for Leading Implementation of eBusiness in the DON; Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Carrier Maintenance Team for an outstanding approach to developing Knowledge Sharing Networks; NAVSEA Past Performance Automated Information System (PPAIS) Development Team for development of a cross-service Web-based shared data warehouse; Fleet Numerical METCAST Team for development of a distributed interactive meteorological and oceanographic knowledge system; Chief of Naval Education and Training (CNET) Navy Training Management and Planning System (NTMPS) Development Team for an Enterprise-Wide Deployment of their system; and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) for outstanding Knowledge Sharing through Communities of Practice; and to Major Dale Long, Chief, Strategic Plans and Requirements, Directorate of Communications and Information, HQ Air Mobility Command of the United States Air Force for the outstanding Knowledge Sharing across the Services.
