By DON CIO News - October-December 2015
The Department of Defense Enterprise Software Initiative (DoD ESI) Commercial Software License Training is now available online and on-site for DON and DoD personnel.

This free DoD ESI Commercial Software License training provides contracting, legal, and technical personnel with knowledge to recognize and avoid the myriad hazards and significant potential negative effects resulting from the complexities and challenges of developing software license agreements. This training also satisfies the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy - Acquisition and Procurement (DASN AP) requirement that all DON contracting personnel involved in preparing and issuing software license contracts take specialized software licensing training.

The next on-site training opportunity will be Nov. 3-4, 2015, at the Hilton in Crystal City, Virginia. Pre-Registration is required.

To register please visit, the DoD ESI website.

Training:
DoD ESI provides specialized commercial software licensing acquisition and negotiation best practices training at no cost to participants, that includes but is not limited to one-hour webinar training entitled "End User License Agreement (EULA) Best Practices" as well as two-day workshops entitled "On-Site Commercial Software License Acquisition Training" conducted at various locations, as requested.

Participants in the two day on-site training will learn approaches needed to resolve conflicting terms and conditions / licensing issues in EULAs and achieve more effective software license agreements to support the Government's mission. The onsite workshops are most effective when cross-functional teams preparing requirements and awarding contracts attend together. The next workshop is scheduled for November 3 and 4, 2015. For additional training dates, venues, and registration information visit the DoD ESI website training page.

Online tutorials, "ask an expert," and other tools are also available on the DoD ESI website.

DoD ESI
The DoD Enterprise Software Initiative is an official DoD initiative sponsored by the DoD Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead in the establishment and management of enterprise commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) IT agreements, assets, and policies. DoD ESI was formed in 1998 by DoD Chief Information Officers to save time and money on commercial software.

A joint team of experts (Software Product Managers or SPMs) consolidates requirements and, with designated contracting officers, negotiate with commercial software publishers, hardware sellers and IT service providers resulting in a more unified contracting and vendor management strategy across the entire department.
