On Oct. 17, 1922, LCDR Virgil C. Griffin in Vought VE-7SF made the first takeoff from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, USS Langley (CV-1) anchored in York River, Virginia.
US, German, Turkish Sailors Help Spanish Monastery — Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133, Detail Rota, volunteered for a community relations (COMREL) project at a Spanish monastery in Rota, Spain, Sept. 29. More than 20 personnel volunteered as a gesture of goodwill at The Sisters at the Monastery in La Cartuja in Jerez, Spain. In addition to the Seabees, the volunteer group included U.S. Sailors from USS Leyte Gulf (CG55), eight German sailors from FCS Niedesachsen, and two Turkish sailors from TCG Kemalries.
U.S. Navy’s E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft achieves Initial Operational Capability — The Airborne Command Control and Logistics Wing announced Oct. 16 that the latest variant of the E-2 aircraft, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, achieved Initial Operational Capability Oct. 10. IOC signifies that the first operational squadron, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 125, is manned, trained, equipped and ready to start deployment preparation with E-2D a1ircraft.
U.S. Navy's Overseas Force Structure Changes Underscore Commitment to the Asia-Pacific — The U.S. Navy announced that the ballistic missile defense (BMD)-capable guided-missile destroyers USS Benfold (DDG 65) and USS Milius (DDG 69) will become part of the Forward Deployed Naval Forces (FDNF) based at Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan. As part of the U.S. Navy's long-range plan to put the most advanced and capable units forward, Benfold and Milius will leave their current homeport of San Diego and forward deploy to Yokosuka in the summers of 2015 and 2017, respectively. The move directly supports the announcement made by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel in April of this year that the Navy would commit to sending two additional BMD-capable ships to the defense of Japan by 2017.
USS Constitution to Get Underway for Final Time Until 2018 — USS Constitution got underway in Boston Harbor on Friday, Oct. 17, in commemoration of the U.S. Navy's 239th birthday and the ship's upcoming 217th birthday. More than 500 guests, made up of individuals and organizations with long-standing ties of support to both the ship and the Navy, accompanied Old Ironsides on her fifth and final underway demonstration of 2014. This is the historic warship's final Boston Harbor underway until 2018, as she is scheduled to enter dry dock in March 2015 for a three-year planned restoration period.
On Oct. 15, 1948, the first women officers on active duty are sworn in as commissioned officers in the Regular Navy under the Women's Armed Services Integration Act of June 1948 by Secretary of the Navy John L. Sullivan. The women are Capt. Joy B. Hancock, Lt. Cmdr. Winifred R. Quick, Lt. Cmdr. Anne King, Lt. Cmdr. Frances L. Willoughby, Lt. Ellen Ford, Lt. Doris Cranmore, Lt. j.g. Doris A. Defenderfer, and Lt. j.g. Betty Rae Tennant.
