After more than two decades of conflict there have been pockets of instability over the past months in Casamance. USAID's Casamance Program supports peace building activities, such as grassroots conflict resolution, peace process advocacy, and training to build local negotiation and conflict resolution skills.

Why Our Work Matters…

Globally, countries lose an estimated 0.7 percent of their annual gross domestic product for each neighbor involved in armed conflict, considerably increasing their own risk of civil war.

Facilitated events generally include workshops, seminars, town meetings, and peace dialogues, and can be geared toward any number of societal groups. These events can serve to strengthen a reconciliation process, but can also be part of a pre-emptive, prevention process to build tolerance for or understanding of traditional rivals or adversaries before conflict has broken out. Such activities may involve one or more conflicting parties.
62 community-based reconciliation projects completed

This indicator captures the number of reconciliation projects that were initiated within the community and completed. It indicates how successful U.S. foreign assistance has been in engaging local communities and government institutions in the process of reconciliation, thus improving the chances of project sustainability and broader buy-in by other key parties.

Illustrative activities include: negotiation training; public opinion polling; facilitation activities; elder statesmen engagement; provision of international expert advice and knowledge; financial support to parties; multi-stakeholder dialogues; assistance with the design of peace-building training programs; support and maintenance of agreed-verification and complaints-tracking mechanisms; and work with local and national government representatives to bring them closer to their constituencies. These are key processes that advance a peace process through increasing public support, knowledge and skills.
