Office Information

Regional Director

Welcome to Region 7 of the National Labor Relations Board. We conduct elections, investigate charges of unfair labor practices, and protect the rights of workers to join together, serving eastern Michigan from our main office in Detroit and resident office in Grand Rapids. If you have questions or wish to file a charge or petition for election, please visit one of our offices and ask for the Information Officer on duty. We can arrange to have someone speak with you in the language of your choice. We are also happy to provide speakers and materials to promote a greater understanding of the National Labor Relations Act.

SEEKING VOLUNTARY FIELD EXAMINER INTERNS
This Regional Office participates in the NLRB’s Volunteer Field Examiners Program for undergraduate and graduate students.  The Volunteer FX interns assist in conducting unfair labor practice investigations, arranging representation elections, conducting elections and performing basic legal research. Volunteer Interns will work directly with agents and report to a supervisor who will guide them in handling case work and investigations. Interns may be briefed by senior officials from throughout the Region and Agency about the NLRB and the NLRA. Interns will be asked to produce written work products summarizing the results of investigations along with recommendations.  The Agency will work closely with participating schools to ensure class credit where permitted or desired and will provide on-the-job training as well as training on the NLRB through live and video presentations of the Agency’s Summer Intern Program and regularly scheduled Board Agent training.  Please click on the following link: Student Positions - Pathways and volunteer for more information.

An NLRB Administrative Law Judge has found that a labor union violated the National Labor Relations Act when it conditioned the granting of concessions in collective-bargaining with the discharge of a member of the employer’s negotiating team.

In a decision issued Thursday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit upheld a 2010 National Labor Relations Board ruling that an employer and union did not violate federal labor law by entering into an agreement establishing principles for bargaining if employees selected union representation.

In a published opinion that issued on Wednesday, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has enforced a Board Order finding that a Michigan long-term care and rehabilitation center unlawfully refused to bargain with a unit of charge nurses.  In doing so, the Court affirmed the Board's conclusion that the nurses were not supervisors under the Act.

Employees at JBS Packerland, a beef processing plant in Plainwell, Michigan, voted in favor of union representation on Wednesday in an NLRB-supervised secret ballot election. The tally of ballots found 641 votes in favor of representation by UFCW Local 951 and 160 votes against union representation. There were also 8 void ballots and 27 challenged ballots (mainly of employees whose names did not appear on the eligibility list), which were insufficient in number to effect the final election results.
