Vehicle Registration Renewal – Available to the public. This service allows customers to renew their vehicle registration online by entering either the title number, vehicle identification number (VIN) or vehicle number (found on newer titles).
Vehicle Search – Available to businesses and the public. The service allows users to instantly search for and view vehicle record information including owner information, title history and registration information.
Driver History Records – Available to the public and to authorized businesses such as insurance agencies and trucking companies that routinely request large numbers of driving records. This service enables authorized users to instantly view driver record information by validating their user information and entering the name, driver license number and birth date of the driver whose record they are requesting. The records do not display the driver’s Social Security number, address or any previous driver license numbers. The service is available to anyone who has a Montana driver license or state-issued identification card.
Temporary Registration Permit – Available to Montana vehicle dealers, vehicle services staff in county treasurer offices, and the Title and Registration Bureau.

The mission of the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) is to identify and promote efficient, cost-effective programs that benefit the interests, safety and well-being of Montana citizens through licensing, registering and regulating the motoring activities of the public.

"As we move forward with a commitment to increased customer service, MVD looks forward to serving you."

The Division continuously strives for excellence in customer service. Streamlining the way we do business has allowed us to improve our efficiency and make our services more convenient for our customers. A major part of that process is a new computer system – the Montana Enhanced Registration & Licensing Information Network (MERLIN). MERLIN is being implemented in stages, with the most recent involving the April 2009 rollout of the title and registration system throughout the state.

Customers can request their driving records, research a vehicle’s history, schedule an appointment for certain driver license services, perfect a security interest in a vehicle at the time of sale, or renew their vehicle registration online. In the future, watch for online release of security interests in vehicles, calculators to compute anticipated vehicle registration fees, and more.
