BLM ALASKA WILDERNESS STUDY AREAS

WSAs are special areas with ecological, geological, educational, historical, scientific and scenic values.  Congress makes a final determination as to whether to designate a WSA as wilderness, but until it does so, BLM manages areas suitable for designation as wilderness. In Alaska, BLM manages one area as a WSA.

The Central Arctic Management Area is an area identified by Section 1001 of Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act where BLM was directed to conduct an interdisciplinary study of natural resources on the federal lands. It is commonly referred to as CAMA. Section 1004(c) of Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act designated some of the federal lands in Central Arctic Management Area as a wilderness study area (WSA). The Central Arctic Management Area WSA includes BLM lands west of the Kilik river and is part of the BLM’s National Conservation Lands.
