Operation ROAM

Illegal border activity takes a toll on public lands such as the Sonoran Desert and Ironwood Forest National Monuments.  For example, off-road travel, littering and vandalism can threaten these fragile environments.

In response, BLM Arizona has launched a coordinated strategy to enhance public safety and mitigate impacts to the public lands in the state.  Actions under the strategy include enhancing law enforcement operations and communications, placing barriers to deter unauthorized traffic, and removing trash.

BLM Arizona’s border security and resource protection strategy has three primary goals:

  • Provide a safe and secure environment for the public and employees.
  • Protect natural and cultural resources, especially in designated areas, including monuments and national conservation and wilderness areas.
  • Enhance coordination and cooperation with border law enforcement and land-management partners.
