The United States and Argentina signed a Letter of Understanding (LOU) in 2009 establishing a framework to promote hemispheric cooperation on labor issues such as employment generation, social insurance programs, discrimination in the workplace, occupational safety and health and other topics of mutual interest. The LOU was renewed in October 2015 in Washington, DC.
A USDOL delegation, headed by the Secretary of Labor, visited Argentina and met with Argentine government officials, union leaders, civil society organizations, and academia to discuss opportunities for bilateral cooperation. While in Argentina, it was announced that the DOL’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) would provide $9 million for programs to support the improvement of laws and policies related to apprenticeship opportunities for vulnerable youth in Argentina, Costa Rica, and Kenya.
A delegation from Argentina’s Ministry of Labor and Social Security visited the US Department of Labor to discuss international cooperation, employment projections, the occupational outlook handbook, and other topics of mutual interest. The delegation met with DOL staff from the Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The USDOL and Argentina’s Minister of Labor and Social Security, renewed the LOU on Labor Cooperation between our two countries.
The Ministries of Labor of Argentina, the United States (DOL), and the Bahamas will work together in 2014-2015 on the policy working group of the Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (IACML) of the OAS. Argentina is the Chair and DOL and the Bahamas serve as Vice Chairs. To follow-up on the Declaration and Plan of Action adopted by the Ministers of Labor in the region, the working group will organize regional labor meetings focused on social dialogue based on freedom of association and collective bargaining; formalization of the informal economy, addressing precarious employment and broadening social protection; integrated strategies for improving entrance into the labor market; and equality, eradication of discrimination and social inequality. The first working group meeting is expected to take place in September 2014 in Barbados. The second working group meetings will take place in 2015 in Colombia (TBC).
