NIMHD to Host Intensive Two Week Course on Health Disparities
On August 5-16, 2013, NIMHD will offer its Translational Health Disparities Course on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. This hands-on, intensive course will feature nationally and internationally recognized experts from across many fields of research, medicine, and policy. Biological and non-biological determinants of health will be addressed, and a range of social, political, economic, cultural, and legal theories related to health disparities will be covered. Participants will gain comprehensive and actionable knowledge on health disparities and will formulate their own plans to address a health disparities topic relevant to their own work. The registration deadline is May 15. The course is free but space is limited.

Health Disparities Summit Calls for Accelerated Pace toward Health Equity
The 2012 Science of Eliminating Health Disparities summit was a success! Thousands attended and over one hundred presented new findings and bold ideas including leaders from across the fields of science, policy, and practice. The opening ceremony honored former Congressman Louis Stokes for his dedication to ending health disparities.

In commemoration of Women’s History Month, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is pleased to welcome Dr. Susan Wood as the featured speaker for the NIH Health Disparities Seminar series on March 21, 2013. This month’s presentation is entitled: Implementation of Health Reform: Ensuring the Health Needs of Women.

Leading cancer researcher appointed NIMHD Clinical Director
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) of the National Institutes of Health has announced that Eddie Reed, M.D., an award-winning physician and internationally recognized cancer researcher, will serve as the clinical director for the NIMHD Intramural Research Program. NIH Announces Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities
The National Institutes of Health announces the transition of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) to the National In stitute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). The transition gives the institute a more defined role in the NIH's research agenda against health disparities, which it defines as differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of diseases and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups. ‘We Have Unfinished Business’
Minority Health Center Now an Institute
Two decades of work to bring attention to the unequal burden of illness and death experienced by racial and ethnic minorities, rural and poor populations in this country has culminated in the creation of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities at NIH. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148) also known as the health care reform law signed by President Obama on Mar. 23, 2010, re-designated the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities to an institute. The official re-designation was announced in the Federal Register on Sept. 13. (more)
