May 2015 DAIDS Council-Approved Concepts

Concepts represent early planning stages for program announcements, request for applications, or solicitations for Council's input. If NIAID publishes an initiative from one of these concepts, we link to it below. To find initiatives, go to the Opportunities and Announcements portal.

Council approval does not guarantee that a concept will become an initiative.

Understanding HIV Persistence in Infants—FY 2017

Request for Applications—Proposed FY 2017 initiative

Contact: Devasena Gnanashanmugam

Objective: This initiative is intended to advance the existing knowledge of the pathogenesis of perinatal HIV-1 infection by exploring the unique aspects of the infant's developing immune system and its interaction with the virus, including establishing HIV-specific immune responses as well as viral reservoirs in order to elucidate novel strategies for HIV-1 remission.

Description: This initiative will solicit applications that examine unique aspects of the pathogenesis of perinatal HIV infection and the infant immune response as they relate to establishment of HIV reservoirs. It will support the following:

  • Exploring the developing immune system, such as infant immune tolerance and age-dependent maturation of innate and adaptive immune responses to HIV infection
  • Developing broadly neutralizing antibodies to HIV in early life
  • Mucosal immune responses

It will also support research related to viral reservoir dynamics in the perinatally-infected infant:

  • Contribution of latency and low-level ongoing replication to HIV persistence
  • Comparative characterization of latent reservoir dynamics
  • Association of duration of viral suppression in relation to time of infection, rate of viral decay, immune status, and other factors

This initiative will not support clinical trials.
