Want To Hunt In Idaho?

Idaho has some of the best hunting in the West, including trophy species and other big game animals, upland game, turkeys and waterfowl.

Here's what you need:
A gun, a hunting license and a place to go. Everything but the gun is available here. Resident licenses vary from nonresident licenses.

  • To hunt white-tailed or mule deer, you need a hunting license and a regular deer tag. A resident tag differs from a nonresident tag.
  • To hunt pheasants you need a hunting license. Hunters need an upland bird permit only on the nine wildlife management areas where pen raised birds are stocked.
  • Hunters born after January 1, 1975, may need to pass a hunter education course to get a hunting license.

Licenses and tags are available over the counter for almost every species. Links to rules and seasons are listed on this page. Outfitters are available for those who need them. The state is two-thirds public land, and Fish and Game’s Access Yes! program opens more private land to hunters every year.

Plan your Idaho hunting adventure with the Idaho Hunt Planner, an interactive tool that provides everything a hunter needs to know. It navigates through Idaho hunting regulations, seasons, drawing odds and harvest statistics. It provides maps of Idaho Fish and Game regions, game management units and hunt boundaries.

Fish and Game has launched a revision of its long range plan for managing elk. Follow the link below to track the elk planning progress.
