Daniel R. Petrole, Deputy Inspector General

Daniel R. Petrole is currently the Deputy Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Office of Inspector General.

Appointed Deputy Inspector General on July 23, 2006, he oversees the day-to-day operation of a nationwide program of audits, and criminal investigations, relating to the programs and operations of DOL. Mr. Petrole has over 36 years of extensive experience overseeing criminal and civil investigations, audits, and/or internal inspections.

Prior to being appointed to his current position, Mr. Petrole served as Assistant Inspector General for Investigations, Office of Inspector General, Department of Veterans Affairs, a position he has held since August 2003. Mr. Petrole began his service at the Department of Veterans Affairs OIG in 1999, and held the positions of Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Investigations; Director, Criminal Investigations Division; and Program Director, Contract and Procurement Fraud.

In addition, Mr. Petrole served in the U.S. Secret Service for 24 years in a variety of supervisory and high visibility assignments, starting in 1975 as a special agent in the Washington Field Office. This was followed by assignments in the Chicago Field Office and the Presidential Protective Division, serving Presidents Carter, Reagan and Bush. Subsequently, Mr. Petrole served as Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge of the Special Investigations and Security Division; Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge for the Office of Investigations; Inspector; and Special Assistant to the Director.

Mr. Petrole earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1973 and is a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute (FEI).
