How are the selections made?
Selections are made at the laboratory level. Researchers review applications and references to determine the most suitable applicants for their laboratories. When will I be notified if I am selected?
Researchers make most selections in March and April. The investigator who has selected you or an administrative officer in his/her laboratory will contact you by phone or email. Once you have accepted an offer, you will receive further instructions via email.

Students who have not been selected will be notified via email from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE) by early May.

What information should I include on the cover letter portion of my application?

What is the minimum age requirement to participate in the Summer Internship Program?
Students are required to be 16 years of age when they come to the NIH campus to begin their internship. (There are no exceptions to this statute.) Applications will be accepted from students who are not yet 16 but who will turn 16 prior to their start date.
