Overview

Status: Endangered / Listed on March 5, 2004
Scientific Name: Urocyon littoralis
Description: The island fox is the smallest North American canid, found only on the California Channel Islands. Four of the six subspecies of fox endemic to those islands gained Endangered Species Act protection in 2004 following catastrophic population declines caused by golden eagle predation and a canine distemper disease outbreak.
