Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

The purpose of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) Artist-in-Residence (AiR) Program is to promote awareness of the exceptional natural and cultural treasures preserved and protected by GSENM - part of our National Conservation Lands - through the celebration of art. By bringing professional artists into the GSENM landscapes for a determined length of time to create works that inspire and promote stewardship of public lands is truly "Taking Public Lands to Heart."

The GSENM AiR program provides artistic and educational opportunities to promote a deeper understanding of, and a dialogue about, the natural, cultural, and historic resources in GSENM. It also provides an opportunity for learning and dialogue about the value of the National Conservation Lands and their connections to the local communities. The artists’ residencies allow uninterrupted time in a stimulating and rugged environment for artists to pursue their work and share it with the public.

GSENM and our local community partner organizations offer two artist-in-residence opportunities each year. One is the Artist-in-Residence in May hosted in Kanab, Utah, in conjunction with the annual Amazing Earthfest community event. The second is the Artist-in-Residence – Plein Air held in September and hosted in Escalante, Utah, in conjunction with the Escalante Canyons Art Festival annual community event.
