PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class James Scott accepted a President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) for his volunteer efforts with the United Service Organizations (USO), during a presentation at the Hickam Air Mobility Command (AMC) Terminal USO, Feb. 29.
Scott, an instructor for Center for Information Dominance (CID) Learning Site Hawaii, completed more than 250 hours of volunteer service, earning him a nomination by the USO staff for the award at the silver status. He volunteered more than eight hours a week, providing support to service members and their families while they traveled through the AMC Terminal at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
"I like volunteering at the USO because it allows me to help people," said Scott. "We get a lot of travelers at the Hickam AMC terminal who get stuck here, so I try to help them out as much as possible and make their unexpected stay in Hawaii as comfortable as possible."
First awarded in 2003, the PVSA is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering.
Retired Brig. Gen. Charles K. Hyde, USO Pacific regional vice president, presented Scott with a congratulatory letter from the president of the United States, along with a citation and official pin.
Scott was part of a small group of volunteers to be recognized, including Air Force service members and retirees.
Lt. Ron Katz, CID Learning Site Hawaii director, was on hand, along with other members of his staff, to congratulate Scott.
"Petty Officer Scott embodies everything that the recognition of the (USO-sponsored) presidential award represents," said Katz. "He is an outstanding professional who exhibits a genuine concern for his shipmates and fellow service members, and he has a passionate commitment to community service. All of us here at CID Learning Site Hawaii are honored to have a Sailor of his character and caliber onboard."
CID, with headquarters based at Naval Air Station Pensacola Corry Station, Florida, is the Navy's learning center that leads, manages and delivers Navy and joint forces training in information operations, information warfare, information technology, cryptology and intelligence.
With nearly 1,300 military, civilian and contracted staff members, CID provides training for approximately 22,000 members of the U.S. armed services and allied forces each year. CID oversees the development and administration of more than 200 courses at four commands, two detachments and 12 learning sites throughout the United States and Japan.
