The USGS Library database includes over 325,000 records for books, journals, maps, microforms, videocassettes, CD-ROMS, and pamphlets. Online citations describe items that have been added to the library since 1975 plus all of the publications of the USGS. The catalog identifies how many copies of each title are in the collection, where the copies are located, and whether they are currently charged out or available.

The z39.50 standards make use of attributes to "code" a client’s query so that the receiving server can process the query correctly. There are six (6) encoding definitions in the z39.50 standard:

  1. USE or INDEX
    • Specifies which data field(s) the query should be processed, such as author, title, subject
    • [1 = personal name 4 = title 7 = ISBN 8 = ISSN 1003 = Author Keyword 1035 = General Keyword]

  2. RELATION
    • Controls the order of numerical expression, like date ranges
    • [1= less than 2 = less than or equal to 3 = equal 4 = greater or equal to 5 = greater than 6 = not equal]

  3. POSITION
    • Specifies the location of term(s) within the fields for matching query, such as first or anywhere.
    • [1= first in field 3 = any position]

  4. STRUCTURE
    • Specifies the structure of data in the query, a single word, a phrase, or a word list is searched
    • [1 = phrase 4 = year 6 = word list]

  5. TRUNCATION
    • Specifies type of truncation processing for query, whether or not a partial search word can be typed
    • [1 = right truncation 100 = do not truncate]

  6. COMPLETENESS
    • Specifies whether or not the search must contain the entire, exact field
    • [1 = incomplete subfield 3 = complete field]
