Mississippi Sailor Laid to Rest 75 Years after Pearl Harbor — Sailors from Naval Air Station Meridian were honored to help lay to rest the remains of Fireman 1st Class Jim H. Johnston exactly 75 years after he died aboard battleship USS Oklahoma (BB-37) in Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Johnston, 23 at the time of his death, is from the small town of Wesson and was known as a friendly, red-headed boy who always smiled.
Interment Ceremony Aboard USS Arizona Honors Survivors and Victims on 75th Anniversary — The first thing Lt. Patrick Zuchelli notices is the silence out on the water of Pearl Harbor. It's the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks and he's waiting patiently for the boat that will take him and about 300 others to the USS Arizona Memorial for a special interment service.
Sailors, Civilians of the Year Recognized Through America Connections Media Outreach Program — In the coming months, the Navy will honor thousands of Sailors and Navy civilians with Sailor, Junior Sailor, Bluejacket and Civilian of the Year honors. The Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO) helps commands share these stories with media in cities across America where the honorees have connections, such as where they grew up, where they went to school or where they have family residing.
Navy Accepts Delivery of Future USS John Finn — The Navy accepted delivery of future guided-missile destroyer USS John Finn (DDG 113) from shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) on the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7. HII delivered DDG 113 after successfully completing three sets of at-sea and in-port trials which proved the ship's operational readiness.
New Program Offers Employment Opportunities to Transitioning Service Members — Service members of the Hampton Roads community participated in an orientation session Dec. 6 for Onward to Opportunity (O2O), a no-cost training and certification program for service member transitioning to civilian careers. The program is offered through the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University, in partnership with the Schultz Family Foundation and Hire Heroes USA.
Naval War College Seeks Papers on Women, Peace, Security — U.S. Naval War College is issuing a "call for papers" in preparation of its 5th annual Women, Peace and Security Conference to be held, August 2017, at the college. In an effort to gather theoretical and practical ideas from a wider audience not normally represented in a limited conference format, the conference series chair is soliciting papers from academics, researchers, military personnel, non-governmental organizations, and individuals who have an interest or experience in issues pertaining to WPS.
Rivalry Comes to the Ice: Navy and Army Square Off in D.C. — Before the Navy Midshipmen and Army Black Knights meet on the gridiron in the 117th Army - Navy game Dec. 10, servicemembers took their storied rivalry to the ice at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., Dec. 5. Army Navy week kicked off with local servicemembers from all five branches of service as they met at the centerline following the Washington Capitals win over the Buffalo Sabers in a friendly, pick-up style game of hockey.
Navy Hosts 2nd Annual Future Strategy Forum — The Navy kicked off the second annual Future Strategy Forum today at the Naval Heritage Center's Burke Theater in Washington, D.C. The forum, titled "Innovation, Technology and the Future of Navy Strategy" and slated to run Dec. 5-6, opened with remarks from Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Operations, Plans and Strategy), Vice Adm. John Aquilino, who emphasized the role of strategy in today's Navy.
Navy Program Office Recognized for Innovation Excellence — A team from the Navy's Undersea Integration Program Office (PMW 770) was selected for the 2016 Innovation Excellence Acquisition Team of the Year award by Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition (ASN RD&A). The team was recognized Nov. 18 and 28, 2016.
USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) Arrives in San Diego — The Navy's most technologically advanced surface combatant, USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), completed her journey to San Diego Thursday, Dec. 8. Zumwalt's arrival to her new Southern California homeport concluded a nearly four-month transit from Bath, Maine, which included training operations, various port calls, and a commissioning ceremony in Baltimore. Zumwalt departed Bath Iron Works shipyard Sept. 7 and made several port visits to eastern U.S. Navy fleet concentration areas, such as Norfolk and Mayport, Florida.
