Program Overview

Activity Description

Among men in the United States, prostate cancer is the most common nondermatologic malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related death. In 2010, the American Cancer Society estimated that approximately 217,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and that 32,000 deaths were caused by the disease. Due to advances in screening and detection, many men are now diagnosed at the very earliest stages of prostate cancer, when it is still localized within the prostate gland. Treatment options for clinically localized prostate cancer include watchful waiting (active surveillance), radical prostatectomy, external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and androgen deprivation therapy. In 2008, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) published a systematic research review on the comparative risks and benefits of therapies for clinically localized prostate cancer. In selected analyses, outcomes were stratified by tumor characteristics, patient demographics, and provider/hospital qualities. The key findings and clinical applications of the AHRQ systematic review are presented in this online continuing education program in which expert clinicians discuss treatment options.
