“On September 24th, I volunteered to deploy to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to join the Disaster Response Team to help more than 60,000 displaced residents find homes after the devastating floods in August. I was assigned the lead HUD role at the Celtic Shelter in Baton Rouge to join a team working to find permanent housing solutions for 130 families before the shelter was scheduled to close about a week later.” Read more about Tony’s experience while volunteering in Baton Rouge. When you think of natural partnerships, government and philanthropy may not be your first thought. In HUD’s new report, Scaling Solutions, we work to turn those perceptions around. This guide explores the unique cross-sector collaboration that emerged during HUD’s Sustainable Communities Initiative and profiles communities around the country where philanthropy and the public sector are leveraging each other’s strengths to deliver results for communities and build projects together from the ground up. In the Twin Cities, the Central Corridor Funders Collaborative, a critical partner during the region’s Sustainable Communities Initiatives grant, formed to ensure development of the regional transit expansion would be inclusive and create opportunities for the diverse neighborhoods along the new metro line corridor in addition to attracting private investment. Lead Safe Renovators prepare a home in Providence, Rhode Island for lead remediation. Yesterday, HUD announced a proposed rule that would lower the Department’s level of lead that must be detected in children’s blood to match the one used by @CDCgov. This change will allow HUD to respond earlier when a child under 6 years old is exposed to lead-based paint in HUD-assisted homes. Learn more about this proposed rule on our website. Link in profile. Since 1993, HUD has awarded more than $1.58 billion in grants to communities for identification and control of lead-based paint hazards in over 190,000 low-income privately owned housing units.

Lourdes Castro Ramirez, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing, meets with Lexington Housing Authority resident, Morgan McCutchen at the grand opening ceremony for the Centre Meadows Apartments in Kentucky. At the grand opening, Morgan spoke about the opportunities that have opened for her as a new resident of the community. With access to stable, affordable housing, she was able to enroll at the University of Kentucky, where is she majoring in Elementary Education and is set to graduate next year. The Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) development underwent a $30 million renovation leveraging federal funds to enable local, state, and private funding for a complete reconstruction of 206 units. This morning, @secretarycastro met with residents at the Balseiro affordable housing development in Puerto Rico. The 11-story, 74-unit senior facility was completed last year with financing through the Puerto Rico Housing Finance Authority, HOME and Low Income Housing Tax Credits. ----------------------------------------------------Esta mañana, el secretario Castro se reunió con los residentes en las unidades de vivienda Balseiro en Puerto Rico. La unidad de 11 pisos y 74 unidades se terminó el año pasado con financiación por medio de la Autoridad de Financiación de Vivienda de Puerto Rico, el programa HOME y de créditos fiscales relacionados con vivienda para personas de bajos ingresos.
