Investigation of Allegations of Research Misconduct

Research misconduct is very narrowly defined as: (1) Fabrication of results, making up data; (2) Falsification of data, manipulating research materials, equipment or processes, or changing or omitting data or results such that the research is not accurately represented in the research record or; (3) Plagiarism, the appropriation of another person’s ideas, processes, results or words without giving credit.

Maintaining the highest ethical standards in the conduct of research remains the goal of the entire scientific community at the NIH. Our good reputation is essential for maintaining the trust of Congress, the American People, our Scientific Colleagues across the US and the International Community. It is the responsibility of each Investigator who participates in research at the NIH, no matter what their career stage, to maintain exemplary standard of intellectual honesty in formulating or conducting research and to report any suspected research misconduct to the NIH Agency Research Integrity Officer (ARIO).
