See the Future: Naval EXPO Coming to Washington, D.C. — For the first time ever, the general public will be admitted free to the Naval Future Force Science and Technology EXPO general exhibit hall Feb. 4-5 where they will be able to see the Electromagnetic Railgun, an autonomous swarmboat, a firefighting robot and much more. Held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., the EXPO is the Navy's premiere science and technology (S&T) event, held every two years to showcase some of the Navy's latest technologies and bring together the brightest minds from around the world to share information, discuss research opportunities and build S&T partnerships between the Navy, Marine Corps, industry and academia.
NASA Touches-Down on TR — Sailors aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), along with a distinguished visitor from NASA, answered a long-distance phone call from the International Space Station (ISS), Jan. 26. NASA astronauts Navy Cmdr. Reid Wiseman, Air Force Col. Eric Boe, U.S. Marine Corps Col. Randy Bresnik, Serena Aunon, Michael Barratt along with NASA flight surgeons Air Force Maj. Anil Menon and Dr. Stephen Hart visited TR for a taste of life aboard an aircraft carrier and a chance to meet her Sailors. NASA flight director Gregory Whitney, and NASA military liaison Judy O'Connor also joined the group visiting TR.
Battleship Missouri Memorial Celebrates "Mighty Mo's" Double Launch Anniversaries — Seventy-one years ago, America's last battleship, the USS Missouri was launched out of the Brooklyn Navy Yard to begin a military career that would span three wars over five decades.
Misawa Sailors Begin USS Constitution Snow Sculpture — Sailors stationed at U.S. Naval Air Facility (NAF) Misawa and its tenant commands began work on a snow sculpture as part of the 66th annual Sapporo Snow Festival in Hokkaido, Japan, Jan. 29. The team will build a replica of the Navy's oldest commissioned ship, USS Constitution, marking the 32nd anniversary of Misawa Sailors participating in the festival, which draws about two million spectators each year.
Greenert Explains Value of Presence, Danger of Cuts — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan W. Greenert testified about the effects of sequestration to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Jan. 29.
Game On: Virtual Trainer Takes Serious Approach to Electronic Warfare —Strike Group Defender: The Missile Matrix Strike Group Defender is a virtual "demo space" developed as part of the Office of Naval Research Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Future Naval Capabilities (FNC) portfolio managed by PMR-51. It prepares Sailors for various scenarios and was named "Best Government-Developed Serious Game" in the Serious Games Showcase and Challenge at the simulation and training industry's premier event last month: the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Florida.
Navy Information Dominance Forces Command Hosts Ceremony Commemorating Navy's Newest TYCOM — An official ribbon cutting ceremony marking the establishment of Navy Information Dominance Forces (NAVIDFOR) Command was held Jan. 28 at the DoD complex in Suffolk, Virginia. The ceremony commemorated the establishment of the Navy's newest global Type Command (TYCOM) responsible for the man, train, equip and readiness mission for all Navy Information Dominance (ID) capabilities afloat and ashore.
VP-26 Begins Historic Last Deployment of the P-3C Orion — The "Tridents" of Patrol Squadron (VP) 26 begin their last deployment with the P-3C Orion aircraft with a send-off of their first two planes out of Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Jan. 22. The historic occasion was attended by senior leadership, family and friends of VP-26 Sailors and members of the Jacksonville community.
USS Rodney M. Davis Decommissioned — Sailors and guests bade farewell to Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG 60) as the ship concluded 28 years of naval service during a decommissioning ceremony on Naval Station Everett (NSE), Washington, Jan. 23. Retired Cmdr. Craig R. Heckert, the first commanding officer of Rodney M. Davis and Capt. William M. Triplett, former commander of Destroyer Squadron 9 were guest speakers for the decommissioning. Several former crew members, plank owners, friends and family also attended.
USS California Returns from Maiden Deployment —The Virginia-class attack submarine USS California (SSN 781) returned to its homeport at U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, from its maiden deployment Jan. 24. Under the command of Cmdr. Shawn Huey, California is returning from the U.S. European Command area of responsibility where the crew executed the Chief of Naval Operation's maritime strategy in supporting national security interests and maritime security operations. During the deployment, California transited more than 40,000 nautical miles.
