National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NCI coordinates the National Cancer Program which conducts and supports research training health information dissemination and other programs with respect to the cause diagnosis prevention and treatment of cancer rehabilitation from cancer and the continuing care of cancer patients and their families.

LRP Research Priorities

NCI accepts LRP applications from researchers with any biomedical doctoral degree who engage in qualifying cancer-focused clinical research or pediatric research. NCI does not give preference to applicants with one type of biomedical doctoral degree over another.

National Eye Institute (NEI)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NEI conducts and supports research that helps prevent and treat eye diseases and other disorders of vision. This research leads to sight-saving treatments reduces visual impairment and blindness and improves the quality of life for people of all ages. NEI-supported research has advanced our knowledge of how the eye functions in health and disease.

LRP Research Priorities

NEI will give higher priority to applicants whose research and clinical degree is in a health-related field with special emphasis on vision. This includes individuals with an M.D. O.D. Ph.D. or an equivalent health professional degree.

National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NHLBI provides leadership for a national program in diseases of the heart blood vessels lungs and blood; blood resources; and sleep disorders. Since October 1997 NHLBI also has had administrative responsibility for the NIH Women's Health Initiative. The Institute plans conducts fosters and supports an integrated and coordinated program of basic research clinical investigations and trials observational studies and demonstration and education projects.

LRP Research Priorities

NHLBI will support clinical and pediatric applications from health professionals with doctoral degrees.

National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)

Institute Mission (Brief)

Completion of the Human Genome Project has opened up the "Genomic Era" in biomedical research. NHGRI supports research in several areas: elucidating the structure and biology of genomes understanding the biology of disease and advancing the science of medicine.

LRP Research Priorities

NHGRI will give highest priority to LRP applications in the areas of population genomics genomics proteomics genomic medicine and technology and methods development in all these areas. Of special interest are applications with a focus on bioinformatics and the quantitative sciences. Applications that examine the ethical legal and social implications of genomics or genetics research are also of high priority.

National Institute on Aging (NIA)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIA leads a national program of research on the biomedical social and behavioral aspects of the aging process; the prevention of age-related diseases and disabilities; and the promotion of a better quality of life for all older Americans.

LRP Research Priorities

NIA encourages all eligible applicants pursuing clinical research who have a qualifying research or clinical doctorate to apply for these funds provided the focus of the clinical research is related to aging.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIAAA conducts research focused on improving the treatment and prevention of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems to reduce the enormous health social and economic consequences of this disease.

NIAAA is looking for applicants whose research is consistent with the mission of the Institute.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIAID research strives to understand treat and ultimately prevent the myriad infectious immunologic and allergic diseases that threaten millions of human lives.

LRP Research Priorities

For the Clinical Research LRP NIAID gives priority to M.D.s or other health professionals who work directly with patients. For the Pediatric Research LRP NIAID gives priority to M.D.s or other health professionals who work in a basic or clinical area of high pediatric relevance.

National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIAMS supports research into the causes treatment and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases.

LRP Research Priorities

NIAMS encourages health professionals with doctoral degrees who are pursuing clinical or pediatric research within the mission of NIAMS to apply.

National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIBIB improves health by promoting fundamental discoveries design and development and translation and assessment of technological capabilities in biomedical imaging and bioengineering enabled by relevant areas of information science physics chemistry mathematics materials science and computer sciences.

LRP Research Priorities

NIBIB will give higher priority to LRP applications from health professionals with clinical doctoral degrees who are either licensed to treat patients or licensed to interact with other clinicians who directly affect the treatment of patients. These include individuals with an M.D. Ph.D. or equivalent health professional degree. By contrast scientists with a Ph.D. or equivalent research-intensive doctoral degree who are not directly involved in the treatment of patients will be given lower priority.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NICHD research on fertility pregnancy growth development and medical rehabilitation strives to ensure that every child is born healthy and wanted and grows up free from disease and disability.

LRP Research Priorities

NICHD will give higher priority (in each LRP program it supports) to applicants with doctoral-level clinical degrees.

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIDCD conducts and supports biomedical research and research training on normal mechanisms as well as diseases and disorders of hearing balance smell taste voice speech and language that affect 46 million Americans.

LRP Research Priorities

NIDCD will give higher priority to clinically trained applicants with doctoral degrees who engage in LRP-qualifying clinical research or pediatric research on hearing balance smell taste voice speech or language.

National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR)

Institute Mission (Brief)

The mission of NIDCR is to improve oral dental and craniofacial health through research research training and the dissemination of health information. We accomplish our mission by:

• Performing and supporting basic and clinical research;
• Conducting and funding research training and career development programs to ensure an adequate number of talented well-prepared and diverse investigators;
• Coordinating and assisting relevant research and research-related activities among all sectors of the research community; and
• Promoting the timely transfer of knowledge gained from research and its implications for health to the public health professionals researchers and policy-makers.

LRP Research Priorities

NIDCR will give highest priority to clinical research and pediatric research applications from individuals focusing on areas directly related to oral dental and craniofacial research which are relevant to the NIDCR strategic plan. These areas include infectious diseases health disparities behavioral and social aspects of health and disease temporomandibular joint dysfunction developmental biology and mammalian genetics epithelial cell regulation and transformation pharmacogenetics bone and tooth physiology and injury molecular and cellular neuroscience oral microbiology and microbial pathogenesis immunology and immunotherapy AIDS and oral manifestations of immunosuppression biomaterials and tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIDDK conducts and supports basic and applied research and provides leadership for a national program in diabetes endocrinology and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases and nutrition; and kidney urologic and hematologic diseases. Several of these diseases are among the leading causes of disability and death; all seriously affect the quality of life of those who have them.

NIDDK is looking for applicants whose research is consistent with the mission of the Institute.

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIDA leads the nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction through the support and conduct of research across a broad range of disciplines as well as the rapid and effective dissemination of results of that research to improve drug abuse and addiction prevention treatment and policy.

LRP Research Priorities

NIDA's broad definition for qualifying applicants includes individuals holding any biomedical or behavioral doctoral degree who engage in LRP-qualifying clinical or pediatric research relevant to NIDA's mission.  NIDA gives higher priority to applicants who are earlier or more junior in their careers over mid-career or senior investigators.

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)

Institute Mission (Brief)

The mission of NIEHS is to discover how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives. Its vision is to provide global leadership for innovative research that improves public health by preventing disease and disability from our environment.

LRP Research Priorities

NIEHS encourages all eligible applicants pursuing clinical or pediatric research provided that the focus of the research is related to how environmental agents cause or exacerbate a variety of human diseases and disorders. NIEHS makes its funding decisions based on scientific merit responsiveness to the Institute's priorities and availability of funds.

National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIGMS supports basic biomedical research that is not targeted to specific diseases. NIGMS funds studies on genes proteins and cells as well as fundamental processes like communication within and between cells how our bodies use energy and how we respond to medicines. NIGMS supports research in the clinical fields of trauma, burn and peri-operative injury, sepsis, wound healing, pharmacogenomics, and anesthesiology and peri-operative pain.

LRP Research Priorities

NIGMS will give higher priority (in each LRP program it supports) to applicants with doctoral-level clinical degrees.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

Institute Mission (Brief)

NIMH provides national leadership dedicated to understanding treating and preventing mental illnesses through basic research on the brain and behavior as well as through clinical epidemiological and services research.

National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)

Institute Mission (Brief)

The mission of NIMHD is to promote minority health and to lead coordinate support and assess the NIH effort to reduce and ultimately eliminate health disparities. In this effort NIMHD will conduct and support basic clinical social and behavioral research; promote research infrastructure and training; foster emerging programs; disseminate information; and reach out to minority and other health disparity communities.

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)

Institute Mission (Brief)

The mission of NINDS is to reduce the burden of neurological diseases - a burden borne by every age group every segment of society and people all over the world. To accomplish this goal NINDS supports and conducts research both basic and clinical on the normal and diseased nervous system; fosters the training of investigators in the basic and clinical neurosciences; and seeks better understanding diagnosis treatment and prevention of neurological disorders.

LRP Research Priorities

NINDS will give highest priority to applications from individuals with clinically-oriented degrees (e.g. M.D. D.O.) who are licensed to treat patients in a health-related field. Applications from individuals with a Ph.D. or other research-intensive degree who are not licensed to treat patients will have a low probability of being selected for funding.

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)

Institute Mission (Brief)

The mission of NINR is to promote and improve the health of individuals families communities and populations. The Institute supports and conducts clinical and basic research and research training on health and illness across the lifespan to build the scientific foundation for clinical practice prevent disease and disability manage and eliminate symptoms caused by illness and improve palliative and end-of-life care.

LRP Research Priorities

NINR supports clinical and pediatric LRP applications from health professionals with doctoral degrees. NINR will give highest priority to applications from nurse scientists.

John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC)

Center Mission (Brief)

FIC promotes and supports scientific research and training internationally to reduce disparities in global health.

LRP Research Priorities

FIC is looking for applicants whose research is consistent with the mission of the Center.

National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS)

Center Mission (Brief)

The mission of NCATS is to catalyze the generation of innovative methods and technologies that will enhance the development testing and implementation of diagnostics and therapeutics across a wide range of human diseases and conditions.

LRP Research Priorities

NCATS is looking for applicants whose research is consistent with the mission of the Center.

National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)

Center Mission (Brief)

NCCIH is charged with the mission of defining through rigorous scientific investigation the usefulness and safety of complementary and alternative medicine interventions and their roles in improving health and health care.

Our Center's three long range goals are to:

1. Advance the science and practice of symptom management
2. Develop effective practical personalized strategies for promoting health and well-being; and
3. Enable better evidence-based decision-making regarding the use of complementary health approaches and their integration into health care and health promotion.

In pursuit of these goals NCCIH supports research on mind and body interventions practices and disciplines; research on natural products; and studies of "real world" patterns and outcomes in the use of complementary therapies.

LRP Research Priorities

NCCIH encourages all eligible applicants with biomedical doctoral degrees to apply to the LRP including those with clinical doctoral degrees (i.e. Ph.D. and M.D.) individuals with doctoral degrees in complementary health practice (i.e. Ph.D. N.D. D.A.O.M. D.C. D.O. D.N.P. etc.) or both. All applications must be aligned to NCCIH's mission research priorities and strategic plan (http://nccam.nih.gov/). For the LRP program NCCIH will only consider applications in Clinical and Pediatrics research.

Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP)

Office Mission (Brief)

ORIP provides the research infrastructure and related research programs and coordinates NIH's science education efforts. The trans-NIH nature of ORIP includes coordination of research and other activities to advance medical research in all disease areas and across the basic translational and clinical research continuum including the development and access to critical animal models to study human disease.

LRP Research Priorities

ORIP gives preference to individuals supported from a research activity funded by the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) at ORIP. The research must be directly related to the ORIP mission. ORIP will give higher priority to applicants with the D.V.M. /V.M.D. or equivalent degree.
