VCNO Participates in the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security Dialogue 2015 — Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michelle Howard participated in a panel discussion during the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security Dialogue 2015 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Dec. 10. The topic for the panel was "Implementing Successful National Maritime Strategies."

Ike Concludes Successful Basic Phase — The aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) successfully concludes the basic phase of training with the completion of Tailored Ship's Training Availability/Final Evaluation Problem (TSTA/FEP), Dec. 9.

BEMR: A New Reality for the Future Force — New virtual-reality capabilities emerging at the Battlespace Exploitation of Mixed Reality-or BEMR-Lab, in San Diego, California, will make dramatic impacts across the Navy and Marine Corps, officials announced Dec. 10.

Delayed Arrival of LCS 5 — USS Milwaukee (LCS 5) arrived at Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia following a delay caused by the discovery of metallic debris in the port and starboard combining gear filter systems.

Deep Dive: ONR-Supported Research Combats Oxygen Toxicity in Navy Divers — For the first time, ketone esters-oral supplements useful in epilepsy treatment-are being studied to fight seizures caused by hyperbaric oxygen toxicity, a life-threatening byproduct of breathing too much oxygen that impacts deep-water divers. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is sponsoring this research.

America Modifications Increase Air Capabilities — The amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) is the first West Coast ship to have its flight deck upgraded with a thermal spray coating in key landing areas in order to more fully support the F-35 Joint Strike Fighters (JSF) that will be attached to the ship during future operations.

Naval War College Workshop Explores Legal Issues in Syria — Legal scholars, military lawyers, policy makers and representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGO) met recently at U.S. Naval War College (NWC) to discuss if and how international law is functioning in the current Syria conflict. More than 40 participants from the Unites States and Europe were asked to provide insights for the workshop, titled "Syria: Can international law cope?"

Oceanographer of the Navy Celebrates 185th Naval Oceanography Birthday — The Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy celebrated the 185th anniversary of Naval Oceanography and the 50th anniversary the meteorology and oceanography (METOC) designator was implemented, Dec. 4, during an award ceremony held at the U.S. Naval Observatory.

SECNAV Visits USS Dwight D. Eisenhower — Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus visited Sailors aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) as the ship continues its pre-deployment work-up cycle off the coast of Florida, Dec. 4. Mabus observed flight operations from the flight deck, ate lunch with junior Sailors on the mess decks and addressed the ship's crew at an all-hands call in the hangar bay. He reenlisted Sailors, presented awards and spoke about the importance of the Navy.

Improving Prosthetics for Amputees: NMRC Hosts First DoD Osseointegration Program Meeting —The Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) hosted the first Department of Defense Osseointegration Program steering committee meeting to plan the next step in implementing osseointegration (OI) prosthesis research and clinical trials for wounded service members with upper or lower extremity amputations, Dec. 1.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (Nov. 29, 2015) An MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter assigned to the Dusty Dogs of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7 flies toward the Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Kanawha (T-AO 196) during a replenishment at sea with the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). Dwight D. Eisenhower, with embarked Carrier Air Wing 3, is underway conducting the Tailored Ship's Training Availability (TSTA) and Final Evaluation Problem (FEP) as part of the basic phase of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan.
