VCNO Delivers Remarks at Women in Defense 'Service to the Flag' Presentation — Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) Adm. Michelle Howard spoke with members of the Women in Defense (WID), a national security organization, during a ceremony at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, June 18. WID presents its "Service to the Flag Award" to members who have served national defense and security, military service members, and members who have facilitated partnerships between industry and the military. The recipients are generally exemplary members of the organization who have had distinguished careers in their respective fields.

History-Making Ribbon Cutting at Camp Lemonnier — The only permanent U.S. military base on the African continent marked a major milestone with the completion of the first brick-and-mortar barracks at Camp Lemonnier, June 15 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new barracks demonstrate the U.S. commitment in the Horn of Africa and sends a strong message to our strategic partners in the region. The $34 million project broke ground July 6, 2013 and was completed 709 days later. The barracks has 125 double occupancy rooms and will be home to 250 E-6 uniform service members.
Naval Surface Warfare Center Staff, Recognized as Top Navy Scientist, Engineer — Two Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division (NSWC IHEODTD) staff received the Dr. Delores M. Etter Award for Top Scientists and Engineers for 2014, during a ceremony held at the Pentagon, June 12. Award recipients were Vasant Joshi, senior materials scientist and Greg Young, propulsion engineer and program. The award was established in 2006 and is named for Dr. Delores Etter, former assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, and recognizes Navy civilian and military personnel for exceptional science and engineering achievements.
Navy Fire and Emergency Services Personnel Win DoD's Annual Award — The Department of Defense (DoD) recognized several Navy shore commands last month during the Annual Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Awards. Each year the DoD recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of the services for their contributions in fire prevention and honors fire departments and fire fighters in a DoD F&ES program. More than 40 nominees across nine categories competed for the Department of Defense awards.
NAS Whidbey Island SAR Rescues Injured Climber — Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) Search and Rescue (SAR) rescued a 41-year-old male climber who fell from a cliff in the Colchuck Lake area of the Cascade Mountain Range, June 15. SAR responded to the call after the Chelan County Sheriff's Department could not extract the patient due to the terrain. The patient suffered numerous injuries and was taken to Harbor Medical Center where he is expected to make a full recovery.
Annapolis Welcomes French Frigate L'Hermione — A large crowd braved the heat and humidity June 16 to welcome to Annapolis a replica of the 18th century French frigate L'Hermione. L'Hermione was the ship that carried the Marquis de Lafayette from Rochefort, France, to Boston in 1780 with the welcome news that the French were sending arms, ships and men to help the colonists fight the British. The symbolic return of L'Hermione pays homage to Lafayette and this historic relationship between France and the U.S.
SECNAV Visits NATO Energy Security Center of Excellence — Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus visited the NATO Energy Security Center of Excellence during a stop in Vilnius, Lithuania, June 17. The center, established in 2012, provides subject-matter expertise for the development of NATO's capacity in the field of energy security by providing cost-effective solutions to support military requirements, in consultation with academia and industry. NATO's energy objectives include enhancing energy efficiency for military forces, an area Mabus has focused on since assuming office in 2009.
Navy Showcases Research and Development Programs at National Maker Faire — The U.S. Navy showcased new, innovative research and development programs during the inaugural National Maker Faire at the University of the District of Columbia, June 12-13. Maker faires, held periodically around the world, are a technological nurturing ground for innovative thinkers and creators to showcase their talents and educate the public and one another. At the faire, Navy engineers and scientists introduced to the public its newest technology for future fleet Sailors, which included Calculator Robots, a miniature underwater glider named SeaGlide, a 3D printed prosthetic hand, a milling machine, laser cutters and other creations.
Navy's Deputy for Warfare Integration for Information Dominance Gets Firsthand Look at Training —The deputy director of Warfare Integration for Information Dominance for the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N2/N6FA) met with the experts who train the fleet Information Dominance Corps (IDC) during a visit June 12. During her visit to the Center for Information Dominance (CID), Rear Adm. Linnea Sommer-Weddington was briefed on the Digital Tutor (DT) program and the Navy's Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (Navy COOL) program.
