CNO Releases Annual Navigation Plan — Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert released the 2015-2019 Navigation Plan Aug. 19. The document details the Navy's plans for the next five fiscal years and discusses the need to be ready to “address a wide range of threats and contingencies” in spite of the possibility of sequestration in 2016.
SECNAV Visits Future USS America — On Aug. 19, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus boarded the future USS America (LHA 6) in the Strait of Magellan during the ship's maiden voyage, aptly named "America Visits the Americas." While aboard the America, Mabus dined with the crew and spoke to Sailors and Marines during an all-hands call in the amphibious assault ship’s hangar bay.
SPAWAR Selects Vendors for CANES Delivery Orders — The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, on behalf of the Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (PEO C4I), has selected five vendors to build and deliver the Navy's next generation tactical afloat network, Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES). Each vendor will be awarded an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ), firm-fixed-price and cost-plus-fixed-fee contract.

CNO Recognizes FY 2013 Environmental Award Winners Via Virtual Ceremony — Twenty-seven winners in ten categories including Natural Resources Conservation, Environmental Quality and Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition were recognized at the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Environmental Awards competition via a video teleconference (VTC) ceremony at the Pentagon Aug. 20. This marks the second time that the ceremony has been held via VTC.
NWC Symposium Examines Career Opportunities, Costs of Ethical Conduct — On Aug. 18, the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) held its first Ethics Symposium of the 2014-15 academic year in conjunction with its convocation. The goal of the thrice yearly event is to “instill a broad ethical understanding for students at the school.” The symposium featured Rear Adm. Margaret Klein as keynote speaker, who discussed ethical challenges in a constantly changing society.
A Unified Response to Maritime Security Challenges in Southeast Asia — Intelligence Officer Lt. Quint Bowen of Destroyer Squadron 7 discusses the benefits reaped from this year’s Southeast Asia Cooperation and Training (SEACAT) exercise.
The New Face of Firefighting for the Navy — Commander, Naval Installation Command (CNIC) is sponsoring a training initiative involving an innovative new tool called PyroLance. The tool uses an “ultra-high pressure stream of water” to fight fires. Firefighters at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay are the first to participate in training to use PyroLance, which is so strong that it can penetrate concrete and steel barriers, thus enabling firefighters to reach shipboard fires more easily.
NRL Researchers Recognized with Top Scientist and Engineer Awards — In an awards ceremony held June 6, eighteen U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) scientists and engineers representing ten NRL research divisions were honored with the Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientist and Engineer of the Year Award. Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development & Acquisition) Sean Stackley and Dr. Delores Etter were on hand to present the awards.
Flight Deck 50; Recreating a Tragedy— The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) recently conducted an exercise known as a “flight deck 50,” which simulated the fire that took place on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CVA 59) on July 29, 1967 – the worst U.S. aircraft carrier fire since World War II. The drill was conducted to prepare Sailors to respond when faced with similar emergencies.
