FORT MEADE, Md. (NNS) -- Sailors assigned to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/ U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F) participated in cyber security training sessions held between Aug. 4-15 at the Maritime Learning Center in Linthicum, Maryland.
Team members from Navy Reserve, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (NR SPAWAR) Network Operations Support Team Meade led one-week iterations of both Network+ and Security+ for FCC/C10F Sailors.
"The program is designed to enhance the security of Navy information networks by training and certifying Sailors in Network+ and Security+," said Lt. Cmdr. Stacey Demick, NR SPAWAR team member.
Security+ is an international, vendor-neutral certification that proves competency in system security, network infrastructure, access control and organizational security.
Network+ is a certification that is used to measure skill as a network technician: understanding of network hardware, installation, and troubleshooting.
"The individual Sailor benefits from obtaining a valuable civilian certificate and the Navy benefits from having a better trained IT force," said Demick.
Headquartered in San Diego, SPAWAR's reserve program sends mobile training teams worldwide to help Sailors improve network security and meet the Navy's cyber security goals.
"The Network+ class was beneficial for my job because it helped me build a solid foundation of essential skills and knowledge about the network," said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Andrea Pinos-Jimenez, a FCC/C10F Sailor who hails from Des Moines, Iowa.
While attending the class Pinos-Jimenez earned the CompTIA Network+ certification.
"They provided great tips and examples to help us understand how to build our LAN [local area network] and protect our network within our own home," said Pinos-Jimenez. "This certification will help me advance in my career inside and outside the Navy."
Fleet Cyber Command is responsible for Navy Networks, Cryptology, Signals Intelligence, Information Operations, Electronic Warfare, Cyber, and Space. As such, it serves as the Navy Component Command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy's Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service, exercising operational control of Fleet Cyber Command mission forces through 10th Fleet.
