Secretary of the Navy Visits Singapore during CARAT 2014 — On July 30, Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus addressed Sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) and USS Halsey (DDG 97), as well as staff from Commander Task Force 73 (CTF 73) and Destroyer Squadron 7 (DESRON 7) in Singapore. The Sailors are there to participate in shore-based and at-sea training events as part of the 20th annual exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) with the Republic of Singapore Navy at Changi Naval Base.
USNS Mercy: Hospital at Sea — During Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2014, hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19)’s crew is helping to train other nations with best practices for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief efforts.
NPASE Sailors Participate in COMREL — A team of Sailors and Marines from Navy Public Affairs Support Element (NPASE) East took part in a community relations project (COMREL) with Norfolk's ForKids charity. The July 30 event saw the team landscaping grounds and cleaning up a local housing project.
7th Fleet Commander Kicks Off 20th CARAT Singapore — An opening ceremony was held at Changi Naval Base on July 29 to mark the beginning of the 20th annual exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Singapore. Remarks were given by Vice Adm. Robert Thomas, commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, who spoke to an audience of hundreds of U.S. Navy Sailors and members of the Republic of Singapore navy.

Mercy Holds Mass Casualty Drill During RIMPAC's Sea Phase — During the at-sea phase of Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2014, hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) participated in a mass casualty drill. The July 27 drill emulated an oil platform explosion and gave the crew an opportunity to treat patients with mock injuries and also take part in a series of helicopter medical evacuations.
New Demonstration Electric Hybrid Bucket Truck Operating in Hawaii — On July 26, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii Utilities Maintenance Division personnel’s new hybrid bucket truck made its debut at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH).
'Hollywood to the Navy' Program Shows Entertainment Industry Why Platforms Matter — From July 24-27, entertainment industry professionals toured Navy commands including Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific), Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Three, the guided-missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53), and the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Hampton (SSN 767) as part of the Navy Office of Information West's (NAVINFO West) 'Hollywood to the Navy' (HTTN) program, which works to “familiarize entertainment industry professionals with the Navy's assets, capabilities and highly-trained personnel.”
