SECNAV Holds Global All Hands Call — On April 29, the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus addressed Sailors and Marines during a live, global all hands call held at Defense Media Activity in Fort Meade, Maryland. During the broadcast, Mabus answered questions regarding the budget, deployment schedules, pay and allowances, and more.

Navy Announces Changes to Equal Opportunity Program — Last month, the Annual Military Equal Opportunity (MEO) Training Summit was held in Norfolk, Virginia. Command Climate Specialists (CCS) met to discuss ways of improving command climate and reducing damaging behaviors and attitudes.

Going Green: NMCP's ORCA Devours Waste — The organic refuse conversion alternative, better known as ORCA, is the latest in a series of green initiatives undertaken in the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia galley and has reduced not only the weight of trash, but also the volume of trash going to landfills, number of drain clogs, and the load on the garbage grinders.

US Navy: A Mosaic of America Abroad — The Naval History and Heritage Command, located at the Washington Navy Yard, houses a photo archive with an inventory of approximately one million photographs dating as far back as the Civil War-era. NHHC plans to launch its new digital asset management system in June which will allow for cataloging of all the photographs.

Navy Hosts Top High School Researchers in National Competition — The National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS) was held in Washington, D.C. from April 23-27 and featured 240 students from 48 regional competitions. The students presented original scientific research in seven competition categories, from environmental science to engineering; the top three students from each category won undergraduate tuition scholarships.

Makin Island named Recycler of the Year — In an April 29 ceremony sponsored by the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department to recognize local businesses and organizations that have implemented successful, innovative, and exemplary waste reduction reuse, recycling and recycled product procurement programs, the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) was recognized as one of the top Recyclers of the Year.

Sailors from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35 are conducting the first combined operations between the unmanned Fire Scout and the manned H-60 helicopter aboard the littoral combat ship over the next few weeks.

Historic Pearl Harbor Tower Receives Hawaiian Blessing — The Harbor Control Tower at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH), an historic water tank and signal tower that survived the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, was celebrated with a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony April 25.

50 Years Later the C-2A Greyhound is Still Completing the Navy's Mission — The San Diego, California-based Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30, which is responsible for transporting mail, personnel, aviation and shipboard parts to aircraft carriers throughout the Pacific Fleet, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the C-2A Greyhound in April, marking a major milestone for the aircraft.

Constitution Sailors Visit Cook Children's Hospital During Dallas Navy Week — On April 24, Sailors assigned to USS Constitution spent a morning with around 20 patients at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas as part of Dallas-Fort Worth Navy Week. Crew members showcased the Constitution’s history via an interactive, hands-on display which featured a STEM-based presentation along with artifacts from the ship, such as 19th century Sailor uniform items.
