Our Mission

At the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), we conduct criminal investigations, regulate the firearms and explosives industries and assist other law enforcement agencies. We help to prevent terrorism, reduce violent crime and protect the public in a manner that is faithful to the Constitution and the laws of the United States.

We are a unique law enforcement agency in the United States Department of Justice that prevents, detects and responds to acts of terrorism and violent crime. We investigate and prosecute terrorist acts and violent crimes that involve explosives, arson and firearms; repeat and violent offenders; criminal gangs; the illegal use and trafficking of firearms and explosives; arson; and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products. We also partner with communities, industry, law enforcement and public safety agencies to safeguard the public we serve through information sharing, training, research and technology.
