National Garden

Overview

The U.S. Botanic Garden's National Garden opened in 2006 as an outdoor laboratory for gardening in harmony with natural ecosystems and a place for visitors to experience the diversity of plants, including the rose, America's national flower.

Location:

Adjacent to the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory with entrances from Independence Avenue, Maryland Avenue (at 3rd street) and from the Conservatory Terrace

From this three-acre urban oasis, visitors are able to experience the beauty and power of nature, while enjoying the inspiring vistas of Capitol Hill. An abundantly landscaped path meanders through six distinct features:

  1. Regional Garden: features Mid-Atlantic native plants that highlight the diversity and beauty of the region's flora.
  2. Rose Garden: an ongoing experiment, showcasing roses that thrive in the Mid-Atlantic when grown using organic methods.
  3. Butterfly Garden: demonstrates how gardens can provide vital resources for pollinators.
  4. First Ladies Water Garden: honors the contribution of our nation's First Ladies.
  5. Lawn Terrace: functions as a welcoming location for outdoor tours, festivals and summer classes.
  6. Amphitheater: serves as an outdoor gathering place for educational programs and also provides a spectacular view of the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory and the U.S. Capitol Dome.

The U.S. Botanic Garden was formally placed under the jurisdiction of the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress in 1856 and has been administered through the Architect of the Capitol since 1934.
