OIR Offices

In addition to the immediate staff of the Office of Intramural Research, OIR is comprised of several offices and enterprise programs focused on various aspects of intramural research, training, and technology transfer. Learn more about each OIR office by clicking on the links below.

Office of Animal Care and Use (OACU)

The OACU manages NIH’s Animal Welfare Assurance and related programs that assure humane care and use of research animals in compliance with national and international laws, regulations and polices.

Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE)

The OITE strives to enhance the training experience of students and fellows at the NIH. The OITE works closely with NIH Institute- and Center-based training offices to help trainees develop scientific and professional skills that will enable them to become leaders in the biomedical research community.

Office of Human Subjects Research Protections (OHSRP)

The OHSRP manages the NIH Human Research Protections Program to protect the rights and safeguard the welfare of human subjects who participate in NIH intramural clinical trials. This program comprises representatives from the 27 NIH Institutes and Centers, 12 Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), and staff who conduct and support research involving human subjects.

Office of NIH History and Stetten Museum (ONHM)

The ONHM has two components, the Historical Research Unit and the DeWitt Stetten, Jr., Museum of Medical Research. The historical unit has hosted research fellows but currently restricts its activities largely to collecting oral histories and assessing NIH documents and objects for their archival or historical importance. The Stetten Museum maintains virtual and onsite exhibits.

Office of Technology Transfer (OTT)

The OTT manages the patenting and licensing of the wide range of NIH, FDA, and CDC intramural inventions and associated policies.
