Anglers invited to help shape Idaho’s Chinook salmon rules
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game would like to encourage anglers to attend one of three public meetings to help develop the spring Chinook salmon rules for the Clearwater Region.
At these meetings, biologists will discuss what was learned from last year's season, what this year's return is projected to look like, and different strategies Fish and Game can use to manage this year’s run.

Chinook Salmon Public Meetings coming to a location near YOU
Anglers are encouraged to attend one of three public meetings to help develop the 2017 spring Chinook Salmon rules in the Clearwater Region (Clearwater, Snake, lower Salmon, and Little Salmon rivers). The meeting held at Riggins will also discuss the South Fork Salmon River summer Chinook Salmon fishery as well.

Cold and Flu Season...for Fish?
Colds and the flu are caused by viruses, and they make us feel miserable. Viruses can affect fish, too. They may not cough and sneeze, but they exhibit other symptoms. Whether it’s a human or a fish virus, antibiotics don’t work to cure the infection, so the best bet is to avoid exposure altogether. The Eagle Fish Health Lab screens fish for viruses, identifying the infected so that they can be quarantined or culled. Keeping sick fish away from healthy fish reduce risk and helps improve fish survival in the hatcheries.

Keeping fish out of fields
The snow is starting to fall in the Upper Salmon Basin marking the end of another irrigation season for the fish screen shop and our partners in agriculture. This summer 265 fish screens scattered across the Salmon River basin kept hundreds of thousands of fish from being diverted into irrigation ditches and farm fields.

Fall Chinook, steelhead seasons open Sept. 1 for ocean-fresh fish
Fall chinook and steelhead seasons open Sept. 1, and the forecast is for an above-average chinook run and an average steelhead run. It’s early in the run for both fish, and the numbers can change quickly as these migratory fish leave the ocean and swim upstream to Idaho.
