Our first priority is making America a magnet for new jobs and manufacturing. After shedding jobs for more than 10 years, our manufacturers have added about 500,000 jobs over the past three. ...
There are things we can do, right now, to accelerate this trend. Last year, we created our first manufacturing innovation institute in Youngstown, Ohio. A once-shuttered warehouse is now a state-of-the art lab where new workers are mastering the 3D printing that has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything. There’s no reason this can’t happen in other towns.
So tonight, I’m announcing the launch of three more of these manufacturing hubs, where businesses will partner with the Department of Defense and Energy to turn regions left behind by globalization into global centers of high-tech jobs. And I ask this Congress to help create a network of 15 of these hubs and guarantee that the next revolution in manufacturing is made right here in America. We can get that done.

This site will be a “one-stop shop” for news and information on advanced manufacturing programs and related activities under way in federal agencies with science and technology missions. These include interagency initiatives, such as the proposed National Network for Manufacturing Initiative coordinated by the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, as well as agency-specific programs.
To remain strong, our economy requires an advanced, globally competitive manufacturing sector that invents and makes high-value-added products and leading-edge technologies, here at home.
America’s ability to make things underpins America’s ability to innovate, compete, and create good jobs. U.S. manufacturers perform 70 percent of all private-sector R&D and account for 60 percent of U.S. exports and the majority of U.S industry patents. Over the last six decades, innovation — in new products or new processes — was central to three-quarters of the nation’s economic growth. American manufacturers have been major drivers of this economic progress.
Today, innovation and manufacturing capabilities are dispersed around the globe. For the United States to stay at the head of the pack, our nation must redouble efforts to promote a vibrant manufacturing sector. These efforts include contributions from both the private and public sectors, working individually as well as collaboratively.
Manufacturing.gov is still under development. With your feedback on improvements, we intend to make this site an important resource for the U.S.-based manufacturing community. Along with manufacturing.data.gov and other interconnected sites, we hope this portal will help U.S industry and its partners access, apply, and leverage research, information, services, and other resources as they pursue opportunities to innovate and to make it in America!
As the non-partisan Council on Competitiveness has put it, “U.S. manufacturing is more important now than ever.”
