Things to Know About Pay.gov

  • Pay.gov is a secure website supported by the Department of the Treasury's Financial Management Service (FMS).  Pay.gov is used by Federal agencies wishing to offer their customers the advantages of an online payment service.  The main advantages this payment service has over the standard practice of mailing a check or credit card authorization form are:
    • Speed - An online payment may be received and posted to an account one to two days sooner than a payment submitted by first class mail.
    • Security - The United States Department of the Treasury's Financial Management Service (FMS) maintains Pay.gov as a secure website.  Treasury and FMS ensure the safety of personal and financial information entered on or transmitted through Pay.gov.
    • Convenience - An online payment may be made any time a customer chooses -- 24 hours/7 days a week.
  • The following payment methods are available to users of Pay.gov
    • Bank Account Debit (ACH) - Your personal checking or savings account or your business checking account is debited.
    • Credit Card (Plastic Card) - Your VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or DISCOVER is charged.
  • Pay.gov asks for certain information the RRB needs to identify and credit the account on which you are making payment. The information we need, such as Billing Document Number and Account Number, may be found in the top half of the bill, notice or overpayment letter from the RRB.
  • Pay.gov gives you a Pay.gov Tracking ID when your payment transaction is complete. We suggest you write the Pay.gov Tracking ID down or print the screen which gives the Pay.gov Tracking ID.
  • Pay.gov asks you for an e-mail address. You are not required to give them an e-mail address. If you do supply an e-mail address, Pay.gov will forward a Payment Confirmation to that e-mail address. The Payment Confirmation e-mail will contain the Pay.gov Tracking ID, amount paid, payment method, along with other information you may wish to have for your records.
